Why we chose to make our parts in 316 stainless steel and not like some of our colleagues in less expensive 304 stainless steel:
The different types of stainless steel: 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel
There are 2 important types of stainless steel: Inox 304 in which nickel and chromium are added, and Inox 316 in which molybdenum (2 to 3%) has also been added for additional corrosion resistance. Both types provide a thin layer of chromium oxide and possibly molybdenum oxide as rust protection. This chromium oxide film forms spontaneously upon exposure of the stainless steel to air and forms a hard layer which protects the metal from rusting.
304 stainless steel
304 stainless steel products: can be used indoors and outdoors, but must not be installed in a polluted atmosphere (industrial area, port, swimming pool, chemical industry, barn, etc.). The location of your project must be located more than 50km from the coast and the humidity must remain low.
316 stainless steel
316 stainless steel products: can be used in aggressive environments (seaside, etc.). But be careful, this does not exclude the appearance of some rust spots if your stainless steel is not maintained regularly (especially in chlorinated and iodized environments, or if the products are exposed to severe weather)
In environments with a high content of chloric acid or hydrochloric acid or close to the sea, the risk of rust persists for stainless steel 304. This is further reinforced by the presence of sand, wind and high humidity. 'air.
